Yellow Dog River Falls are approximately 50 feet wide and have a 30-foot drop.

A distinctive lone boulder in the middle of the fall distinguishes these falls from others.

11. Great Conglomerate Falls

WHERE? Bessemer | ENTRY FEE? No

Conglomerate Falls is the uppermost of five Black River Falls. It’s also, arguably, the most impressive.

The river splits over a mound of conglomerate rock, forming two separate waterfalls.  They’re split so far that it’s hard to get a picture showing both!

It’s also a very accessible waterfall. There are boardwalks and a well-placed viewing platform to enjoy.

The location is terrific— sometimes northern lights can be seen from the front door!

12. Potawatomi Falls

WHERE? Bessemer | ENTRY FEE? No

Upstream of Gorge Falls, you’ll find the scenic Potawatomi Falls. This waterfall is a great one because it’s wheelchair accessible.

It’s similar to the Great Conglomerate Falls in that it has a split drop. The split isn’t even— most of the water goes towards the eastern bank.

The split doesn’t even exist in high water, so depending on the time of year you go, you might get a very different viewing experience!

Where to Stay:

Hotel: Quality Inn, Ironwood

This comfortable inn is cute inside and out. With an indoor pool, hot tub, and luxuriously comfortable beds, you can’t do much better than this.

There’s even a fresh breakfast every morning with hot and cold options.

Please take advantage of its central location and enjoy the plethora of nearby outdoor activities.

13. Gorge Falls

WHERE? Bessemer | ENTRY FEE? No

Another Black River waterfall, Gorge Falls, is set inside a scenic gorge. This waterfall is an easy addition to a visit to Potawatomi Falls.

It is truly an impressive sight; watch as water rushes out of the narrow gorge above the falls.

The falls are only 5 feet wide and about 35 feet high. While those numbers may not sound very impressive, the distinct gorge makes them gorgeous.

Gorge Falls is a short walk away from the parking lot. From there, it’s a quick walk upstream to check out Potawatomi Falls, which I’d recommend adding.

Where to Stay:

Hotel: Quality Inn, Ironwood

The Ironwood Hotel is my top recommendation for the Bessemer area for a reason!

The inn is ideal for any time of the year. It’s within close driving distance of many different waterfalls, hiking trails, and opportunities for skiing and snowmobiling.

With 3 beds and 2 baths, 9 people can comfortably stay here.

14. Sandstone Falls

 WHERE? Bessemer| ENTRY FEE? No

Sandstone Falls is a small waterfall on the Black River.

While the falls are only about 15 feet high and not the most impressive, it’s a fun spot to visit.

Clamber around the rocks, check out the hollows carved in the sandstone and splash around the river.

You do have to hike 1/4 of a mile in to visit these falls. This short but steep trail has a lot of steps, so go prepared to exert yourself. Nothing a quick dip in the river won’t fix!

Truly a home away from home, this house is cozy and perfect for a great stay.

The Black River basin is nearby, making waterfalls and outdoor hikes within easy driving distance.

15. Rainbow Falls

WHERE? Bessemer | ENTRY FEE? No

The lowermost of the Black River Falls, Rainbow Falls, drops 40 feet below into a deep pit. A rush of foaming water is truly a powerful sight.

The water often creates a mist which can produce a rainbow effect— giving the falls their name.

You’ll need to hike to see these falls. Head 1/2 mile down a hiking trail from the designated parking lot to an observation platform.

The views from the platform are limited. Cross a suspended footbridge upstream at the Black River Harbor Picnic Area for an even better view.

From there, you’ll head 3/4 of a mile down the North Country Trail. The eastern side gives you a better view.

16. Superior Falls

WHERE? Hurley and Ironwood | ENTRY FEE? No

Superior Falls is only a few hundred yards away from Lake Superior and is technically in Michigan and Wisconsin.

It is most accessible to visit on the Michigan side and is a dramatic sight. It’s got a total drop distance of 110 feet, multiple levels, and is easily accessible.

You can see the waterfall from a viewing area near the parking lot.

If you’re itching for more adventure, you can hike down a steep decline and reach Lake Superior. Backtrack along the river to view the falls from the base.

These falls are best seen in early spring due to snowmelt and spring rains.

Where to Stay:

Hotel: Cedars Motel

This motel is truly a winner— it’s got comfortable rooms, highly rated service, is in a fantastic location, and even has a snowmobile trail available at the property.

17. Miners Falls

WHERE? Munising | ENTRY FEE? No

Located north of Munising, Miners Falls is a beautiful waterfall at the end of a short self-guided interpretive trail.

The trail walks you through an idyllic forest and is pleasant in its own right.

The actual height of the waterfall is up for debate— I’ve seen numbers between 40 and 60 feet tall.

Regardless, it’s gorgeous and worth the stop!

You’ll see views of the Miners Basin along the way. Make sure to head down the 64 steps to the viewing platform.

Multiple beaches are within walking distance, and you’ll find it a comfortable spot to come home to.

Scott’s Superior Inn & Cabins
